Banana Peels: More Harmful Than You Think

Pesticide Overload

The Environmental Working Group attests that commercial banana production requires about 35 pounds of pesticide per acre- vastly more than most other produced and sold produce crops in the United States today.

A study done in the Journal of Hazardous Materials affirms the direct absorption and retention of the highest levels of pesticides by banana peels. Research indicates that peel residue may contain up to 0.87 mg/kg with even less in the inner pulp.

A Swiss consumer testing body, K-Tipp determined that toxic pesticide molecules moved past the peel by up to 3 millimeters into the actual banana flesh – that is, even peeling your banana does not guarantee the complete safety of the chemicals.

The researchers of food safety in a study published in the Science Direct raised a red flag stating that most of the pesticide residues detected were concentrated in the banana peels which could not be completely broken even during high-temperature frying or common-use cooking techniques at home.

Chlorpyrifos Brain Risk

In particular, the Environmental Working Group points specifically to chlorpyrifos, one of the more potent organophosphate neurotoxicants that are common in banana planting, as able to induce interference in brain development and measurable cognitive impairment in children, banning its use in early childhood.

Latex Allergy Danger

Clinical studies published in PubMed support the notion that 45 percent of latex allergy patients are also allergic to bananas. Registered dietician Toby Amidor, MS, RD – quoted in Food Network – cautions that banana peels regularly harbor bad bacteria, dirt, and residual fertilizers during commercial handling and transportation, and long before they ever end up on the shelves of American grocery stores.

Fumonisin Mold Risk

Research papers, published by Research Gate, prove that fumonisin B1 – a harmful mycotoxin generated by fungi – proactively contaminates banana peels during postharvest storage, which, as a food safety risk, is documented, and today, most American consumers have zero knowledge of it.

Go Organic Always

When buying bananas, the USDA and FDA suggest that it is possible to select certified organic bananas, but ResearchGate has created an integrative review of pesticides that has determined that all organic banana samples analyzed were free of all pesticide residues on the commercial banana peels.
